Lotteries: Kerala to file affidavit
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI:
In order to facilitate registration of criminal cases against those running Bhutan and Sikkim lotteries, the Kerala Government has decided to file an affidavit in the Supreme Court in a petition challenging a Kerala High Court judgment upholding the April 2005 ban on online lotteries in the State.
This was announced here on Friday by Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac at a press conference after meeting the State Government counsel. In its earlier affidavit, the State had given an undertaking that it would not file criminal cases against operators of these lotteries. But since the operators were allegedly continuing their activities detrimental to the interest of the State, cases had to be registered against them. Therefore, a fresh affidavit would be filed seeking permission for registration of cases against the violators.
At the same time, the State Government had also decided to approach the Union Home Ministry for the cancellation of the registration given to the two States to run their lotteries as such a power was vested with the Centre.
