HYDERABAD: The trial run of Mir Alam tank sewarage treatment plant (STP) taken up under HUDA's Green Hyderabad Environment Programme (GHEP) has commenced.

Mir Alam tank is one of the highly polluted lakes taken up under GHEP at a cost of Rs.25 crores. HUDA Chairman D. Sudheer Reddy, Vice-Chairman Jayesh Ranjan and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Friday inspected the working of 10 MLD tertiary treatment plant that would treat the sewage to the required standards before letting it into the lake.

Executive Director (Urban Forestry) K.S. Reddy explained that the sewage from the surrounding residential colonies would go into the collection tank through sewerage network and from there, it would be subjected to extended aeration in open tanks with fine pore diffused membrane. Speaking to mediapersons, Mr. Sudheer Reddy said the restored Mir Alam lake would be a gift to old city residents and the Chief Minister would inaugurate it soon. The STP was ready and other works were in progress.

When Mr. Owaisi said that Hasan Nagar area in the vicinity of lake had no proper sewerage network and the untreated sewage could pollute the lake, the HUDA Chairman said Rs.1 crore would be spent for modernising drainage lines and linking them up with STP. Mr. Owaisi also pledged some amount from MP's funds.
