CHENNAI: Winergy Drive Systems India (P) Ltd., a subsidiary of Winergy AG of Germany, has signalled its foray into high-speed gear drives by setting up a test bench at its facility in Sriperumbudur near here. These high-speed gear drives will go into steam turbines. The test bench was inaugurated recently. The test bench will be used for full speed mechanical run test of high-speed gear boxes in a range of 500 kW and 30 MW. It will monitor and analyse all relevant data related to noise, vibration and temperature. PL. Muthusekkar, General Manager, said Winergy would source critical components from France, where its parent had a unit. "We have engineering skill and assembling capability to make high-speed gear drives for steam turnbines," he said. The Indian facility came into being in September 2005. Currently, the facility makes windmill gear boxes of 1.25 MW and 1.5 MW capacity. These are supplied to Suzlon Energy. The Sriperumbudur unit, employing around 100 people, churns out 40-45 windmill gearboxes a month. In its first year of operations ended September 2006, the company reported a turnover of Rs. 180 crore. Mr. Muthusekkar said this number would double in the current year.
