NEW DELHI: A senior scientist with the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecast, Laxman Singh Rathore, has been elected Vice President of the World Meteorological Organisation's Commission for Agricultural Meteorology. His election came at the 14th session of the commission, which was held here from October 28 to November 3. With this, Dr. Rathore, who is an Advisor/ Scientist G at NCMRWF, becomes the first Indian to be part of the management group of the commission, which is an important body of the WMO. It is one of the eight technical commissions, which are providing assistance to the WMO's member countries in improving their agro-meteorological services through various activities, including evaluation of climate change and variability and natural disasters on agriculture and services for enhancing farm production through capacity building and technical support. A doctorate from the Rajasthan College of Agriculture, he has over 80 research publications to his credit. An author of two books, he is recognised by the Indian Institute of Technology and three other universities to supervise Ph.D students. He led the meteorological group during the third Indian scientific expedition to Antarctica in 1983-84, when the first Indian station Dakshin Gangotri was set up.
