PALAKKAD: The United Democratic Front (UDF) has given notice for moving a no-confidence motion against Palakkad municipal vice-chairman S.R. Balasubramaniyan of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The notice was given by Congress council party leader P.V. Rajesh. The UDF has 18 members, the BJP 17 and the LDF 15 in the 50-member municipal council. On a High Court directive, Congress councillor V. Devayani had become the municipal chairperson recently. The post had remained vacant for some time after the local body election held last year as no party or front could get majority in the council. The post is reserved for the Scheduled Caste. The Left Democratic Front candidate A.K. Chandrankutty was elected chairperson twice, but he declined to accept the post since he got votes from the UDF and the BJP. When a BJP councillor filed a petition in the High Court seeking the disqualification of Mr. Chandrankutty as councillor for declining to accept the chairman's post twice, the court ordered that the Congress nominee (V. Devayani) who was defeated by Mr. Chandrankutty be made the chairperson. The BJP won the vice-chairperson's post on its own.
