Aided colleges get a reprieve

Special Correspondent

Colleges have to get minimum B grade from NAAC by November 2007

  • Government restores payment of salaries to staff of aided colleges
  • Colleges given one year to get minimum B grade from NAAC

GULBARGA: The State Government has restored payment of salaries to the teaching and non-teaching staff of aided colleges that failed to get minimum B grade from the National Assessment Accreditation Council (NAAC).

    Order modified

The earlier order withholding their salary was modified on the condition that these colleges would seek a revisit by the NAAC team and get at least B Grade before the end of November 2007.

The State Government had stopped payment of salaries of staff of 44 aided colleges in the State which secured less than B grade in the assessment by the NAAC as per the rules and regulations of the aided colleges coming under the College Education Department.

However, the State Government, following pressure from the Federation of University College Teachers Association-Karnataka (FUCTAK), had reconsidered the issue and decided to give one year to these colleges to approach the NAAC again and improve their grading.

    Clause

The Government Order, however, made it clear that if the colleges failed to get at least B Grade accreditation from the NAAC by November 2007, the salary of the teaching and non-teaching staff would be suspended forthwith.

    `Improve facilities'

BJP MLC Shashil G. Namoshi welcomed the decision of the Government to restore the payment of salary and appealed to the principals of the colleges concerned to improve their infrastructure.

The MLC urged them to get B grade accreditation from the NAAC before November next year to avoid suspension of payment of salary by the Government.
