Chennai : Sustainable development is not possible without adequate environmental protection measures, K.A. Mohamed Aziz, Chief Inspector of Factories said on Thursday. Inaugurating a two-day training programme on `Environmental Legislation with Case Laws,' for safety managers from industries across the country, he said that effective environmental management needed to address issues of environmental health, management audit and compliance with rules. "One should have a clear and comprehensive understanding of environmental, occupational health and safety legislation," Mr. Aziz, who is also Chairman, National Safety Council (NSC), Tamil Nadu Chapter, said. M. M. Kulkarni, Director, National Safety Council, Headquarters, Navi Mumbai, said the programme covered Acts relating to water, air, environmental and noise pollution, hazardous wastes and chemicals, public liability insurance, The Batteries (Management and Handling) Rules, 2001 and the Environmental Impact Assessment, 1994. He gave an overview of The Environment (Protection) Act and Rules. R. Mohan Naidu, Director, Environmental Training Institute, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, spoke on the need for industries to conform to environment protection, waste and hazardous management Acts and rules.
