`Suvarna Grama' in 1,000 villages soon

BANGALORE: Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister C.M. Udasi on Saturday said that the "Suvarna Grama'' programme would be launched in 1,000 villages with an allocation of Rs.1 crore to each of them for the overall development of rural areas in the next one year.

Mr. Udasi told presspersons that the programme aimed at removing regional imbalance.

Mr. Udasi said that works such as improving roads, providing drinking water, income- generation programme for farmers, emphasis on education and health for children, training unemployed persons in the age group of 20 to 35 years would get funds from the Rs.1 crore set aside for each selected village. The Minister said that the district in charge Ministers had been requested to identify the villages in three months.

He said already Rs.250 crore had been allocated in the budget for the programme and the rest would be mobilised during the year.

The district-wise allocation of funds is: Bangalore: Rs.20.90 crore, Bangalore Rural: Rs.41.60 crore, Belgaum: Rs. 89.30 crore, Bagalkot: Rs. 32.80 crore, Bellary: Rs. 36.80 crore, Bidar: Rs. 35.40 crore, Bijapur: Rs. 43 crore, Chamarajanagar: Rs. 24.10 crore, Chikmagalur: Rs. 25.20 crore, Chitradurga: Rs. 35.90 crore, Dakshina Kannada: Rs. 31 crore, Davangere: Rs. 38.10 crore, Dharwad: Rs. 19.90 crore, Gadag: Rs. 17.40 crore.
