Tirunelveli: The Commissioner of Police, Tirunelveli, G. Uma Ganapathy Sastry, has suspended a Sub-Inspector, Reghunathan, and a Head Constable Subramanian, both posted at Crime Branch, for allegedly taking bribe from a complainant a few days ago.

Boat goes up in flames

Nagercoil: A mechanized boat belonging to a Thoothur fisherman, Jagathees (30) is reported to have set fire by some un-known persons on Friday.

According to police sources, the fishermen did not venture in to sea for fishing for the last three days following heavy rains, which lashed various parts of the district for the last one week. Similarly all the boats in these areas had been anchored off shore to protect them from being damaged. Meanwhile the fishermen noticed Jagathee's boat going up in flames. The police have registered a case and are further investigating.

Man held on rape charge

Tirunelveli: The police on Saturday arrested Muthuvijayan (55) on the charge of raping a minor girl here on Friday. The accused raped the nine-year-old girl while she was alone at her house.

Stalin visit tomorrow

KARUR: Local Administration Minister, M. K. Stalin, will visit Karur on Monday to launch new projects and schemes. His programme includes launching of renovating the Irattai Vaikkal and road works.

Rain in Karur district

KARUR: Rain lashed various parts of Karur district on Saturday. The chief amounts of rainfall (in mm) registered in the last 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Saturday in various locations across the district are: Mailampatti (39.40) and Panjapatti (26.60). Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 101.33 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Saturday. The inflow was 12,523 cusecs and the discharge 100 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Textile goods dispatched to Kerala

ERODE: Following lorry strike in Kerala, textile goods worth more than Rs. 10 crore had piled up in Erode for the past one week. Now, since the strike has been withdrawn, textile owners have booked goods to Kerala. On Saturday alone, 80 lorry loads of textile goods were dispatched. - Staff Reporter

Handed over

ERODE: A two-day-old girl child was recovered from the thorny bushes near Anthiyur on Friday. According to information, Ranganathan of Thavittupalayam, Anthiyur, who was walking along the road on Friday heard the cry of child and informed his friend Raman.

Both of them cleared the bushes and found the girl child wrapped in a towel. They handed over the child to the Government Hospital, Anthiyur. - Staff Reporter

Body found

Erode: Residents found the body of a male child kept inside a polythene bag on Gobichettipalayam West Park Road on Saturday morning. The Municipal Health officials on information rushed to spot and took the body. After examination, the body was buried. - Staff Reporter

Four of family found murdered

RAJAPALAYAM: Four members of a family were found murdered in their residence here on Saturday.

Police sources said V. Ganesan (45), his wife Kala (40) and daughters Chandinipriya (16) and Krishnaveni (10) were found lying in a pool of blood with multiple cut injuries in their house at R.R. Nagar.

The motive behind the murder was not known, Superintendent of Police T. Senthil Kumar said. — Staff Reporter

Karunanidhi condoles E.V.Saroja's death

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi condoled the death of actor E.V.Saroja on Friday. In a message, the Chief Minister said she was known for her Tamil dialogue delivery. Only last week she attended the dance "arangetram" of his great grand daughter. "I never expected her end would come so soon." He offered his condolences to members of the bereaved family. — Special Correspondent

AIADMK leader moves court

MADURAI: The Madurai (urban) district secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, V.V. Rajan Chellappa, has moved the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court seeking permission to hold a day-long fast in protest against the violence unleashed during the recent local body polls.

He also sought to quash an order passed by the City Police Commissioner, M. Chidambarasamy, on November 1, declining permission for hunger strike on the ground that it would lead to law and order problem.

Justice R. Sudhakar ordered notice to the Commissioner returnable by November 14. — Staff Reporter

Students' rally today

CHENNAI: The Cancer Institute is organising on Sunday a rally by students to create awareness about early detection of cancer. The rally will be flagged off by State Health Secretary V.K. Subburaj at 7 a.m. from the Institute on Sardar Patel Road and it will terminate at Avvai Home School on Besant Avenue. According to V. Shanta, chairperson of the institute, an essay competition in Tamil and English for school students is also organised on November 7, which is observed as "Cancer Awareness Day". The competition will be held at the institute auditorium. The prizes will be distributed the same day. — Special Correspondent

AAI convention on November 9

CHENNAI: Officers and staff of the Airports Authority of India (AAI), Chennai, are organising a one-day convention on "Development of World Class Airport at Chennai by the AAI" on November 9.

According to E.R. Ramesh, convener of the AAI Employees Joint Forum, Southern Region, the convention will deliberate the ill-effects of privatisation of airports.

Sitaram Yechury and M.K. Pandhe, of CPI (M), C.K. Kuppuswamy of DMK, Chinta Mohan of Congress, A.K. Moorthy of PMK, T.K. Rengarajan, All India vice-president CITU, N. Varadarajan, State secretary of CPI (M) and D. Pandian, State secretary of CPI were among those invited to address the convention. The convention will be held at the new car parking area near the Airport police station between 10.a.m. and 3 p.m. — Special Correspondent
