DOUSING THE FLAMES: Fire service personnel trying to put out flames in a cracker unit at Maraneri near Sivakasi on Saturday.
SIVAKASI: Four workers of a cracker unit at Maraneri near here were killed in a fire accident on Saturday. Station Fire Officer (Sivakasi), Pon. Selvendran said the fire broke out with an explosion at around 3.30 p.m. While two of them were killed on the spot, two others died on way to hospital. The deceased were identified as S. Murugan (35), K. Palanimurugan (38), R. Meenakshi (22) and S. Anjammal (60). The injured were out of danger. Six fire tenders from various stations fought till 7 p.m. to put out the flames. Explosive mixing without adequate precautionary measures at an unauthorised place adjoining residential areas was suspected to have aggravated the damage, injuring 54 persons, the police said.
