Staff Reporter
PATHANAMTHITTA: The Social Forestry wing of the Forest Department has prepared a special scheme to grow shade trees in public places as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of united Kerala. In a statement here on Saturday, Assistant Conservator of Forests K.V. Sambadevan said the department would distribute 15,000 saplings in the district in the coming days as part of the project. Mr. Sambadevan said that saplings would be planted on either side of all major roads in the district. He said a scheme had been prepared to grow trees along the Ring Road in Pathanamthitta municipal limits. The department was planning to grow mango trees, aegle (Koovalom), caesalpinium (Pathimukhom), white cedar (Kumbil), aziracta (Neem tree), acacia, catechu (Karingaly) and Cassia fistula (Kanikkonna) as part of the project and saplings would be distributed from the Harita Complex at Eliyarackal near Konni, he said. Mr. Sambadevan said that arrangements would also be made to reach the saplings to those agencies which have registered their names at the Social Forestry office. Non-governmental organisations and other establishments who wish to participate in the afforestation programme may contact the Assistant Forest Conservator (ph: 9447 979134).
