`Muslims neglected'

Belgaum: Belgaum city and district units of the Indian Union of Muslim League (IUML) have alleged that the JD(S)-BJP coalition Government led by Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy had neglected Muslims during the Rajyotsava celebrations. In a press release here on Saturday, IUML district unit vice-president M.M. Pachapuri said Muslims had been participating in golden jubilee celebrations with great enthusiasm. But the Government had not selected even a single person from the community for the Rajyotsava Award. — Staff Correspondent

Cancer detection

Belgaum: The Departments of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Pathology of KLES Hospital will organise a free Gynaec cancer screening (pap smear) camp at the hospital premises on the occasion of World Pap Smear Day on November 7. Science exhibition

BELGAUM: SCIFAIR, a science exhibition aimed at building scientific temperament among schoolchildren, will be organised by Rotary Club of Belgaum at Mahila Vidyalaya on College Road in the city next week. According to Satish Dhamankar, "Rotary Candyman Sci-fair 2006", a three-day event, would give an opportunity to schoolchildren to display and hone their skills in science, mathematics, quiz, elocution, and science parliament. Institution lauded

SHIMOGA: Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy said here on Friday that the Manasa Education Foundation for Mental Health was eligible for the deemed university status. Inaugurating "Vinodini", a postgraduate mental health centre, he lauded the initiative taken by psychiatrist K.A. Ashok Pai and his wife Rajani Pai in promoting mental health. Vice-Chancellor of Kuvempu University B.S. Sheregar said the university would have a tie-up with the foundation to conduct mental health classes through Doordarshan. — Special Correspondent

Kodava cultural fete

Madikeri: The Karnataka Kodava Sahitya Academy here will organise a Kodava cultural evening and release Kodava cassettes at Cauvery Kalakshetra at 6 p.m. on November 6. Speed Post articles, passports missing

Udupi: A bag containing Speed Post articles and passports meant for Udupi is missing, according to a complaint lodged by the Department of Posts with the Udupi Town Police station here on Friday. In his complaint, the Assistant Superintendent of Posts, Mangalore, K.R.N. Murthy said three bags of the Postal Department were sent from Bangalore to Udupi by a KSRTC bus on October 11. But the conductor of the bus handed over two bags to the postal staff at Udupi and one bag containing 63 Speed Post articles, 17 passports and others was missing. Guru Nanak birth anniversary

Bidar: Devotees from across the country will converge on the Gurudwara Guru Nanak Jhira in Bidar on Sunday to celebrate the 537th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak. The celebrations in Bidar have a special significance as the faithful believe the founder of the faith visited this city on his way to Sri Lanka in 1512. Bidar also has a sacred place in Sikh history as Bhai Saheb Singh, one of the Panj Pyare, the five holy warriors of the faith, was born here in 1662. Raichur: A two-day 16th general conference of the Insurance Employees' Union of Raichur division will be held here from Sunday. Amanulla Khan, joint secretary of the All India Insurance Employees' Union, will inaugurate it, according to a release here on Saturday by union secretary J. Suresh. He said the conference would discuss the prevailing socio-economic and political situation in the country and the State. Two die of snake-bite

Raichur: Udayakumar (12), son of Eranna, was bitten by a snake while he was asleep at his house in Amareshwara Camp of Manvi taluk on Friday. He died while being shifted to a hospital. The Manvi police have registered a case. Ashok (6), son of Yenkappa, was bitten by a snake on a field in the limits of Toralbenchi village of Manvi taluk on Friday. Killed in accident

Raichur: Aziza, wife of Sheik Khaja Hussain, died after she sustained serious injuries in an accident on Friday. The autorickshaw in which she was travelling with her husband had overturned and fallen into a ditch on Yapaldinni-Raichur Road near here. She died at the Rajiv Gandhi Super-speciality Hospital. Succumbs to burns

Raichur: Naseema Banu (28), wife of Mohammed Shahid Pasha, who was admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi Super-speciality Hospital with severe burns a month back, died on Friday. Police said the woman sustained burns while she was trying to light a kerosene lamp at her house in Hutti village on October 5. She was admitted to the Hutti Gold Mines Company Hospital and later shifted to the super-speciality hospital. The Hutti police are investigating. — Staff Correspondent

Celebrated

Bidar: Students of the Parvati Primary School in Rajeshwar in Basavakalyan taluk celebrated Tulasi Kalyan festival by planting saplings in their houses on Friday. Students took out a rally to create awareness about environment protection and the need to preserve forests.

Forest officials distributed over 500 saplings to students. Shailendra Kavadi, president of Humnabad-based NGO Parisara Vahini, asked the villagers to plant more saplings and preserve the existing ones. — Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: The State unit of Republican Party of India (RPI) has decided to support the former Deputy Chief Minister and Congress leader Siddaramaiah in the bypoll to Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency. Moroccan Minister visits BEML

Bangalore: Rachid Talbi Alami, Minister for Economic and Social Affairs, Morocco, visited the Bangalore complex of Bharat Earth Movers Ltd. (BEML) on Saturday. BEML plans to open a branch in Morocco as it supplies mining equipment to Moroccan companies. BEML expects to achieve an export turnover of Rs. 100 crore and total sales turnover of Rs. 2,500 crore for the financial year 2006-07, according to a BEML press release. — Staff Reporter

Northern districts neglected: Vaijnath

Bangalore: More than 65 per cent of all projects cleared in the State between April and August this year are to be located in Mysore and Bangalore districts, according to the former Minister Vaijnath Patil. He told presspersons here on Friday that seven northern districts had not got a single project in this period. This was just one instance of how the Hyderabad Karnataka region continued to be neglected.

Denying reports that the Hyderabad Karnataka Horata Samiti had hoisted a separatist flag on November 1, Mr. Patil said the samiti had dropped the demand for a separate State after the setting up of the Nanjundappa committee. The samiti had only observed November 1 as a "black day" in protest against discrimination.

Need to update curriculum stressed

BANGALORE: Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy has called upon business schools to update their curriculum to make students competitive in the changing global economy. He was presiding over the 10th convocation of the Institute of Finance and International Management (IFIM) here on Saturday.

In his convocation address the former ISRO Chairman K. Kasturirangan said that in the past five years 307 overseas companies had been acquired by Indian firms.

Two-day festival of humour
