Manasa shocks top seed Sonakshi

Chennai: S. Manasa of Chennai shocked top seed Sonakshi Rathore of Rajasthan in the opening round of the 20th National under-11 chess championships, which began at the Sri Ramachandra Medical College here on Saturday. The Chennai girl checkmated the top seed in 67 moves with the white pieces.

However, the other seeded girls had it easy. Former National under-7 champion Saranya checkmated Mathura Vani of Delhi on the 49th turn. World under-8 bronze medallist M. Mahalakshmi had to be patient to win a pawn on the 40th turn and convert that into a victory in the pawn ending against Vini Mary Thomas (AP).

In the boys' section, top seed Sahaj Grover of Delhi had an easy time with the black pieces winning a knight via a pawn fork in under 10 moves to beat Hari Vallabha of Tamil Nadu.
