Chennai: The first World tennikoit championship will be held at the Velammal International School, Panchetti here from November 6 to 10. South Africa, Germany, UK, Brazil, Bangladesh, Pakistan and host India are taking part in the championship, which has events in men's singles, men's doubles, women's singles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. Addressing the media here on Saturday, M.V.M. Velmurugan, CEO, Velammal Educational Trust, said, "most of them asked me why tennikoit. I said the reason is that the game is getting popular. All the States at all levels are playing the sport." The individual events (to be played on a knock-out format) will be held on November 6 and 7 and the team championship (to be played on a round-robin basis) will be on November 9 and 10. November 8 is a rest day. B.S. Nagaraj, Secretary General, Tennikoit Federation of India, said: "We are confident that the championship would provide a good impetus to the sport." M.V. Muthuramalingam, Chairman, Velammal Education Trust, said that the Nadia Comaneci Multipurpose Indoor Stadium would be inaugurated on the opening day. S. Venugopal, President, Tennikoit Federation of India and S. Ravi, Secretary, Tamil Nadu Tennikoit Association, also spoke. Sports Reporter
