AVIAN DELIGHT: The Lesser Fish Eagle, a rare variety, that was spotted at the Parambikkulam wildlife sanctuary early this week.
THRISSUR: Lesser Fish Eagle, a rare variety of eagle, has been spotted at the Parambikkulam wildlife sanctuary by ornithologist P.O. Nameer of the Kerala Agricultural University here and amateur bird-watcher J. Praveen from Palakkad, early this week. Dr. Nameer told The Hindu here that till recently Lesser Fish Eagle was found only in the foothills of Himalayas and it is probably for the first time that it has been spotted from Kerala in the last couple of decades. He said as per the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) literature Lesser Fish Eagle is a `near-threatened' species of bird and it is declining in numbers owing due to habitat loss.Lesser Fish Eagle is charecterised by greyish head, neck and breast, brown upper parts and white belly, including thighs. It can be distinguished from the Grey-headed fish, a common species seen near the water bodies in the forests of Kerala, chiefly by the colour of the tail. Also the Lesser fish eagle has longish wings with the wing tips reaching up to the tail tip, Dr. Nameer said.
