22 university employees suspended

Special Correspondent

'They rented out the official quarters allotted to them'

MYSORE: University of Mysore has suspended 22 employees for allegedly leasing or renting out their official quarters.

Vice-Chancellor J. Shashidhar Prasad told The Hindu that the action was initiated recently.. It was necessitated as the staff members had rented or leased out quarters allotted to them at a highly subsidised rate for a phenomenal amount, he said.

"While the university was deducting only Rs. 300 from their basic pay, some of them had rented out the quarters for a sum ranging between Rs. 1,800 and Rs. 3,000. It is not the money that is at stake but the integrity of the staff", Prof. Prasad said.

He cited another case where an employee had allegedly leased out the quarters for Rs. 2 lakh. Both teaching and non-teaching staff were involved in this mini-scandal, he alleged. The university employees had either rented out their quarters to shops or students and private company employees.

The racket surfaced when strangers were seen in the quarters area and the Vice-Chancellor constituted a four-member squad to check the occupancy in the staff quarters, he said.

The squad inspected the quarters on the Manasagangotri campus, near the fire brigade and Kukkarahalli lake, and found that more than 20 of them were under illegal occupation.

The original tenants to whom the quarters had been allotted had rented or leased out them even while continuing to stay in their own houses in the city, he said.

It has also come to the notice of the authorities that a few employees had their own houses in the city but were residing in the quarters.
