KANNUR: Six activists of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M) were on Saturday sentenced to life imprisonment by a court here in connection with the murder of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker in Kannur district in December 2000. Thalassery Additional District Sessions Court (fast track) Judge A.A. Vijayan sentenced the six to rigorous imprisonment for life under IPC section 302 (murder) and slapped a fine of Rs.10,000 each on them. The judge said the convicts would have to undergo RI for three more years if they failed to pay the fine. The BJP activist was stabbed to death inside his house at Vattipram, near Kuthuparamba, on December 3, 2000. The court also sentenced them to rigorous imprisonment for varying periods ranging from six months to seven years and also imposed a fine of Rs.5,000 each on charges of trespass with an intention to commit murder. Failing to pay the amount would attract one more year of rigorous prison term, the court said. Under the Explosives Substances Act, the court sentenced the CPI(M) workers to five years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs.5,000 each. The convicts will have to undergo two more years of rigorous imprisonment if they did not pay the amount. PTI
