PATHANAMTHITTA: Saleem P.Chacko, State secretary of the Revolutionary Youth Front, has been nominated as a member of the State Youth Welfare Board by Law Minister M.Vijayakumar. Mr. Chacko is also a member of the Railway Users' Consultative Committee. — Staff Reporter

Team constituted

ALAPPUZHA: The State police have constituted a special investigation team under a Deputy Superintendent of Police to investigate the whereabouts of N.S. Sajith, one of the main accused in the Kanichikulangara accident case in which four persons were killed. The team includes two Circle Inspectors and four sub-inspectors. Sajith, a managing partner of the Himalaya group of companies, has been absconding for more than a year. Police sources said the special investigation team held its first meeting at Alappuzha on Friday. — Staff Reporter

Plea to protect elephant

KOZHIKODE: The Conservation of Nature Society has urged the Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Olavakode, to take immediate steps to save the life of an elephant hit by a train at Walayar. The Society deplored the attitude of the Forest and Wildlife authorities of absolving themselves of the responsibility of providing protection to the injured elephant. It has also appealed to M.P. Veerendrakumar, MP, for action to save the animal. - Staff Reporter

Rare eagle spotted

THRISSUR: Lesser Fish Eagle, a rare variety of eagle, has been spotted at the Parambikkulam wildlife sanctuary by ornithologist P.O. Nameer of the Kerala Agricultural University here and amateur bird-watcher J. Praveen from Palakkad, early this week.

Dr. Nameer told The Hindu here that till recently Lesser Fish Eagle was found only in the foothills of Himalayas and it is probably for the first time that it has been spotted from Kerala in the last couple of decades.

THRISSUR: The police on Saturday said they were investigating the Sudhakaran-Saji murder case.

Vennarathi Sudhakaran, 43, and Saji, 28, of Nandilathu Parambil, and Sasi were assaulted allegedly by a gang at Kuttur on Friday night as they were riding a motorbike.

Allotment for B.Pharm. course

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In accordance with the verdict of the Kerala High Court the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations will carry out allotments for the B.Pharm. course at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Pharmacy, Meeliyad, Kasaragod and at the Chemist College of Pharmaceutical Science and Research Varikkolli, Ernakulam. Allotment will be done to half of the 60 seats at the Rajiv Gandhi Institute, allotment will be done to 70 per cent of the seats to the Chemist College. While the fee will be Rs.35,000 for the college at Kasaragod, the fee for the freeship seats at the Chemist College will be Rs.9.090 and the fee for the full free seats will be Rs.35,000, a press note issued here on Saturday said. Options can be given at the web site cee.kerala.gov.in till 10 p.m. on November 6, the press note added.

Sathyan National Award for Nedumudi

Thiruvananthapuram: The actor Nedumudi Venu has been selected for the Sathyan National Award 2006 of the Sathyan Foundation. It will be presented to him at a function being held in the Senate Hall here in connection with Sathyan's birth anniversary on December 9. The function will be inaugurated by Kerala University Vice-Chancellor M.K. Ramachandran Nair. It will be followed by a music programme to be presented by well-known playback singers and a dance programme.

`No move for FACT merger'

KOCHI: Union Minister for Fertilizers Ram Vilas Paswan has ruled out merger of FACT with any company, said Tharian Joseph, State president of Lok Janashakti Party, here on Saturday. Mr. Joseph told presspersons that he had met Mr. Paswan on October 31 at New Delhi and discussed the issue. Mr. Joseph said FACT had been a prestigious symbol for Keralites and its identity had to be retained. The Minister was aware of it, he said. Mr. Paswan promised assistance for protecting the industrial unit, Mr. Joseph said. — Staff Reporter
