Three held, fake currency seized

HUBLI: The Haveri district police have bust a counterfeit currency racket and arrested three persons in connection with the case.

Addressing presspersons in Haveri on Saturday, Superintendent of Police H.N. Siddanna gave the names of the arrested as Anand Rudrappa Navale, a tailor of Ranebennur, Basappa Nagappa Kadadakatti of Tadakanahalli village in Hirekerur taluk and Rajesh of Mrugavadhe of Tirthahalli taluk in Shimoga district. Mr. Siddanna said two other accused in the case, Khalandar and Mahesh B. Angadi, were absconding. Based on a tip-off, the Halageri Station Police of Ranebennur taluk arrested them in Tumminakatti village.

Counterfeit currency with a face value of Rs. 98,000 were confiscated by the arrested. Mr. Siddanna informed that Basappa Kadadakatti was the kingpin of the racket and Rajesh used colour photocopier to print the currency.

The accused had printed counterfeit notes with a face value of Rs. 2 lakh and succeeded in circulating 50 per cent of it. It was only when Anand, a tailor from Ranebennur, tried to pay off his debt with the counterfeit currency that the police got wind of it, he said.
