VISAKHAPATNAM : The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is taking precautions in view of reports of incidence of anthrax in the neighbouring Srikakulam district, since of flocks of sheep and goats are brought to the city from slaughterhouses in Srikakulam. Chief veterinary officer of GVMC N. Karunakara Rao said on Saturday that steps like control unauthorised slaughtering, thorough check of sheep and goats at the entry points to the city, inspection before and after cutting of the animals at the GVMC slaughterhouse were being taken.
Training for staff
Training for staff to diagnose anthrax in animals and disposal of anthrax affected animals and public awareness campaign about anthrax were also initiated, he said. A helpline was established to prevent unauthorised slaughter of animals.
