KANCHEEPURAM: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi paid tribute to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi at the Rajiv Gandhi Memorial in Sriperumpudur on Saturday. A two-minute silence was observed. Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and Governor Surjit Singh Barnala, who accompanied Dr. Singh, also paid homage to the leader. Union Ministers P. Chidambaram, T.R. Baalu, A. Raja, Elangovan, G.K. Vasan, Dayanidhi Maran and Anbumani Ramadoss; Tamil Nadu Minister T.M. Anbarasan, Member of Parliament J.M. Haroon, Tamil Nadu Assembly members D. Yasodha, K. Sudarsanam and Peter Alphonse; Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president M. Krishnasswamy and Veerappa Moily were among others who accompanied the Prime Minister to the memorial. Leave for New Delhi
Dr. Singh and Sonia Gandhi returned to New Delhi on Saturday by a special IAF aircraft. Governor S.S. Barnala, Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy, Director General of Police D. Mukherjee, Union Ministers Dayanidhi Maran, P. Chidambaram, E.V.K.S. Elangovan, Palani Manickam, Tamil Nadu Ministers Arcot M. Veerasamy and K. Ponmudi and representatives of the three defence services in the city saw off the Prime Minister and Ms. Gandhi. Dr. Singh and Ms. Gandhi preferred to walk the short distance to hop on to the waiting IAF Boeing-737 aircraft after they arrived by helicopter from Sriperumbudur along with Congress leader Vayalar Ravi.
