Man held with heroin

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Officers of the Air Intelligence Unit of the Chennai airport Customs arrested a passenger from Puducherry at the Anna International Terminal on Thursday and seized heroin worth Rs. 40 lakh.

C. Rajan, Commissioner of Customs (Airport), said the officials intercepted Jalil Bazirali, who was to go to Male, through Colombo, by a SriLankan Airlines flight on Thursday.

When questioned about the contents of his baggage, he gave contradictory answers. More interrogation led Bazirali to admit that he had swallowed 100 capsules of narcotic substance. He volunteered to eject them.

Four grams of narcotic substance packed in a polythene packet and taped with adhesive tape were found.

The powdery substance tested positive for heroin.

The value of the heroin seized was Rs.40 lakh. This was the second such case detected by the AIU this year. Bazirali, who holds a work permit for the Maldives, has been arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psycotropic Substances Act, 1985.
