Desilting of Upputeru rivulet sought

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam Party has demanded that the State Government take up desilting works on Upputeru rivulet near the Kolleru lake as otherwise, many more villages ran the risk of being submerged in the heavy downpour.

At a press conference here on Saturday, senior leader K. Vidyadhar Rao and M.V. Mysoora Reddy, MP, said that because Upputeru was silted, water in Kolleru could not flow through Upputeru into the sea.

Already 74 villages around the lake were surrounded by water and over 2.5 lakh people were suffering for a week, he said.

Mr. Rao said that in the name of fresh orders from Government, the administration had breached bunds of several water bodies near Kolleru. However, they did not de-silt Upputeru and hence, Kolleru was swelling, he said.

Dr. Reddy criticised Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram for `justifying' the high rates of interest charged by the micro-finance institutions.
