Hyderabad: Wonder where is this pool of dirty stagnant water? It is right in the heart of the city next to the Haj House at Nampally. With the city in the grip of dengue and other viral fevers, mosquitoes have found a new breeding ground here.

This piece of land acquired by the Wakf Board in February has turned into a big lake with rainwater and underground sewage accumulating over the months. A patch of hyacinth has formed over the water surface. Polythene bags, plastic bottles can be seen floating all over. This pool is not visible from the road. One has to enter the Haj House to see it.

Health problems

Interestingly, the Wakf Board has not bothered to clean the place all these days. With the Haj season commencing next month this place not only presents a bad picture, but could pose health problems to the pilgrims who will be arriving in large numbers. "There is underground seepage of water from the water body in Public Gardens across the road. Even if water is pumped out it will again get accumulated," said Wakf Board CEO Shaikh Madar. The Board has installed a couple of water pumps, but they are yet to start functioning.

Meanwhile, Mr. Madar, along with Haj Committee chairman Hafiz Peer Shabbir Ahmed and member Mir Kamaluddin Ali Khan, inspected the place on Thursday. They felt this piece of land could not be used for the convenience of the pilgrims arriving next month. They decided to use the open land acquired from Hind Mothers on the southern side.

Mr. Shabbir Ahmed asked the Wakf Board to hand over the entire building to the Haj committee by November 8 for making arrangements for pilgrims.
