House demolished during drive

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Blocks in drainage canals in various parts of the city that were a major cause for the recent incidents of flooding were removed on Saturday under the guidance of the task force committees set up for the purpose.

In the Thiruvananthapuram East Assembly constituency the silt deposits in the canals on either side of the Kalladimughom--Ambalathara road were removed on Saturday morning. Almost 750 metres of the canals were cleaned in this fashion on Saturday.

Similarly, drainage canals in the Kamaleswaram junction and Konchiravila were cleaned. The flood water that had entered 150 homes in the Kalippamkulam ward was pumped out.

The normal flow of water in a kilometre-long canal in the Konchiravila Samadhi road was restored by removing silt deposits there.

In the CIT road near Killippalam, a bunk shop that was constructed atop a drainage canal was demolished; drainage canals at Kilippalam and Jagathy were also cleared. Labourers also worked to contain and eliminate the overflow of sewerage at Melaranoor NGO quarters, the Siva Temple at Karamana, the Aristo junction, Manjalikkulam, Kannettumukku, Kalyan hospital, the Karimadom colony and Jacobs junction. The road near the Thmpanoor bus stand was repaired.

In the West constituency, the drainage canals at Shangumughom, the All Saints College road, the Chakka-Pulli Lane road, Kadakampalli and Vanchiyoor were cleared of blocks.

A house that was blocking the draining of stagnant sewerage was demolished. In the North Assembly constituency, stagnant floodwaters were pumped out.

A press note said the activities of the task force committees will continue.
