Man held for staging his own kidnapping

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A 25-year-old man has been arrested by the East Delhi police for allegedly faking his own kidnapping and demanding a ransom. He had apparently done so to repay Rs. 50,000 that he had borrowed from his friends to set up a dye-making unit.

According to the police, Raja Ram, a resident of Krishna Nagar, lodged a complaint saying that his son, Soni Lal, had gone missing on October 27 and that he had received a ransom call of Rs. 2 lakhs for his safe release. The calls were being made using Soni's mobile phone.

A Special Staff team of the East Delhi police mounted surveillance on the phone calls. They also kept a watch on the use of Soni's ATM card that he was carrying when kidnapped. The card was being frequently used to check the balance as the kidnappers had asked his father to deposit the amount in his account. Constant surveillance helped the police to zero in on some ATM outlets in the three cities of Hardwar, Dehra Dun and Mussoorie in Uttaranchal. Finally, on November 3, the police found Soni Lal entering one of the ATMs in Hardwar. He was taken into custody and questioned. Soni then allegedly confessed to having staged his own kidnapping.
