Anna varsity convocation

CHENNAI: The 27th convocation of Anna University will be held on Monday (November 6), at 4 p.m. at Vivekananda Auditorium, College of Engineering, Guindy. A total of 65,280 graduates will receive their degree certificates. Nearly 60,000 of them are undergraduates. Governor Surjit Singh Barnala will preside over the function. Higher Education Minister K.Ponmudi would also be present. Damodar Acharya, chairman, All India Council for Technical Education, will deliver the convocation address. — Staff Reporter

Appointed Additional Advocate General-IV

CHENNAI: N. Kannadasan has been appointed the Additional Advocate General-IV for Tamil Nadu, according to a government order. — Staff Reporter

Rajapaksa visit: PMK to stage demo

VILLUPURAM: Pattali Makkal Katchi will stage a black flag demonstration in Chennai on November 17 to protest the visit of Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa, according to S.Ramadoss, party founder.

Addressing a press conference at Thailapuram on Sunday, Dr. Ramadoss said on the one hand Mr. Rajapaksa was decimating the Tamil people in the island nation, but on the other he was holding peace talks (with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) just to hoodwink the world community, particularly India.

To voice their protest, the people of Tamil Nadu should hoist black flags and wear black badges and shirts, Dr Ramadoss added. — Special Correspondent

BHEL, Ranipet and IIT-M sign pact

VELLORE: The Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Ranipet and the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras entered into a Memorandum of Understanding for research-based consultancy on Saturday. T.T. Narendran, Dean, Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research, IIT-M and K. Narayanan, General Manager/Engineering, BHEL, Ranipet signed the MoU in the presence of R.N. Misra, Group General Manager, BHEL, Ranipet.

The MoU, effective for a period of three years, enables the two organisations to jointly undertake research projects in conventional boiler auxiliaries such as fans, air pre-heaters, electrostatic precipitators and also the non-conventional and diversification products like flue gas desulphurization system, desalination, defence electronics and information technology. Apart from engineering, areas such as advanced manufacturing systems, robotics and non-destructive testing are also covered under the MoU, says a release. — Special Correspondent

Mehrauli event: State team adjudged best

CHENNAI: The cultural team representing Tamil Nadu in the `Phoolwalon-ki-sair,' an annual event held at Mehrauli area in Delhi to promote communal harmony, has been adjudged the "best troupe and best floral fan."

According to an official release, the team presented its performance at the rally on Saturday.

Artistes from other States including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh also took part in the event, it said. — Special Correspondent

Rain in Pudukottai

PUDUKOTTAI: Heavy rain lashed parts of Pudukottai district on Saturday, bringing cheers to samba paddy growers. For the 24 hours ended at 8.30 a.m. on Sunday, Pudukottai received a maximum of 76 mm of rain.

Temple festival

PERAMBALUR: Thousands of devotees offered worship to Sri Brahadeeswarar at Gangaikondacholapuram, near Jayakkondam, on the occasion of `annabhishekam' on Sunday. The rituals which started in the morning.

Special abhishekams were performed to the consort, Sri Brahannayaki on the occasion.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 102.22 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Sunday. The inflow was 13,992 cusecs and the discharge nil. — Staff Reporter

15 passengers injured

Tuticorin : Passengers of a State-owned public transport bus had miraculous escape after it overturned at Gangaikondan near here on Sunday.

In all, 15 passengers suffered injuries. They were admitted to a private hospital in Tirunelveli. The remaining passengers escaped unhurt.

The bus was plying from Nagercoil to Chennai when the mishap occurred at 7 p.m., while the area was experiencing rain.

Source said the driver had applied brakes when he saw a car coming from the opposite direction.

The bus then skidded off from the tarred portion of the road owing to slippery conditions caused by faulty laying of bituminous on the road surface, sources added. — Staff Reporter

Test tube baby centre

SALEM: The Vinayaka Mission Hospital has established a test tube baby centre. The centre will offer Intrauterine Insemination, In Vitro Fertilization, Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection, Surrogacy, egg donation, egg freezing, laser hatching and various related services to the people, a release from the hospital said.

Dr. Vani Radhakrishnan and Dr. Dhanabagyam head the centre. The hospital has offered free medical consultation for several couples, the release said.

Panchaloha lamps

SALEM: The Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited has introduced Panchaloha lamps for daily puja.

According to a release from the Salem Poompuhar, the Corporation had manufactured Moogambikai panchaloha lamps and displayed for sale. The lamps were sold with a certificate about the gold in them. More information could be had from the showroom.

Killed in accident

SALEM: A two-year-old girl child Ranjani of Jagir Ammapalayam was killed on the sport and her grandmother Anjalai (65) sustained injuries when a lorry hit them here recently.

They were on their way to a temple when the accident took place. - Staff Reporter
