Principal held on `tonsure' charge

Kakinada: The police arrested six employees of Srichaitanya Junior College including the Principal and administrative officer for allegedly torturing and tonsuring the college bus driver and cleaner. Since the cleaner belongs to a Scheduled Caste, a case was registered under the Prevention of SC/ST Atrocities Act. According to the police, the college management had `illegally confined' the driver and the cleaner for two days for alleged misbehaviour with college girls. — Correspondent

Three drowned in sea

Kakinada: Three people - two students of engineering college and an attender of a Corporate hospital here -- drowned in the sea while taking bath on the occasion of Karteeka Pournami on Sunday. Their bodies were recovered by evening and brought to government general hospital for post mortem. — Correspondent

Dies of dengue

GUNTUR: Vema Baby Devi, 39, is said to have died of dengue at Government General Hospital on Sunday. A labourer, she was down with fever from Friday and the situation turned serious on Saturday. She was rushed to the hospital here, but died on Sunday morning. — Staff Reporter

BC panel hearing

HYDERABAD: The National Commission for Backward Classes will hold a public hearing here on November 18 to examine requests for inclusion of any class of citizens as a backward class in the Central BC list. The venue of the hearing at 11 a.m. will be second floor of Damodaram Sanjivaiah Samkshema Bhavan, Masab Ttank (tel. 23319254, 23378482). It will cover the castes/communities of "Kurmi", "Darvesh (Faqeer), "Bare", "Barai", "Marar" and "Tamboli" as synonyms of "Mali", the release stated. — Special Correspondent

Centre for I-T returns

HYDERABAD: The Union Government has set up a Help Centre at the Aayakar Bhavan here to make electronic filing of Income Tax returns (e-filing) easier for companies and persons.

The Help Centre will function on all days from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. till November 30, 2006 and would assist the tax payers in filing their e-returns on www.incometaxindiaefiling

Appointed

Hyderabad: Writer-journalist Pothukuchi Sambasiva Rao has been appointed president of the State unit of the All-India Small Newspapers Association. Dr. Rao, who has been working for eight years in the association, said in a press release that he would shortly nominate a State committee for giving a boost to the small dailies. — Special Correspondent

Rice for flood-hit

HYDERABAD: The NTR Memorial Trust will distribute five kg of rice to each flood-hit family. Trust representative D. Srisailam urged the public to donate for the cause. Monetary contributions could be sent through account payee cheque to the NTR Memorial Trust payable at Hyderabad. CITU State meet

HYDERABAD: The State Council of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) meeting on Novermber 7 and 8 at Warangal will finalise the protest programme seeking solutions to the problems facing the unorganised labour. It will be attended by over 200 delegates. — Special Correspondent

Ryot electrocuted

ANANTAPUR: P. Suryanaraya (42), a farmer, was electrocuted while watering his farm at Mallelapalli in Dharmavaram mandal on Saturday. According to the police, he came in contact with a support cable to the service connection of his pump set. - Staff Reporter

Best teacher award

ANANTAPUR: Head of the Department of Chemistry in Sri Krishnadevaraya University here Prof. M.C.S. Subha received the State Best Teacher award from Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy in Hyderabad on November 1. She is the first woman teacher from SKU to receive the award. - Staff Reporter

TIRUPATI: The Swadeshi Jagaran Manch (SJM) will hold its three-day national convention at Jodhpur in Rajasthan from November 10.
