Telugu Desam Party wants him to surrender the land

  • Chief Whip produces documents to prove land is regularised
  • TDP asks Speaker to refer issue to Ethics Committee

HYDERABAD: Even as Government Chief Whip N. Kiran Kumar Reddy on Sunday denied the charge of encroaching Government land in Banjara Hills here, the Telugu Desam Party has demanded that he be sacked if he failed to surrender the land immediately.

Refuting the charge, Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy dashed off a letter to Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy urging him to order an inquiry into the issue. At a media conference, he produced documents to prove that the land abutting his house in Sri Venkateswara Housing Society was regularised.

The land was purchased from former MLA, M. M. Ratnam in 2001, he said adding that the society had sent notices to members asking them to apply for regularisation of land adjacent to their houses. As per the direction, 835 square yards were regularised in his name by completing all the formalities. "I paid Rs. 3.76 lakhs towards regularisation," he said denying influencing the office-bearers.

At a separate press conference, the TDP leaders, Ch. Rajeswara Rao and K. Vijayarama Rao said the party would petition Speaker K. R. Suresh Reddy to refer the matter to the Assembly Ethics Committee.

They wanted the Chief Minister to take serious view of the charge and relieve him from the post. Besides him, all others who had encroached the lands in the society should return them to the Government.

CPI(M) State Secretary, B. V. Raghavulu, said this was yet another incident involving a Congress leader in land related scandal. Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy who is known for his criticism of the Opposition should come out clean on the issue.
