Bidar: There is a huge demand for veterinarians in India and abroad, senior veterinary surgeon B. Shridhar has said. Dr. Shridhar, who has over 26 years of experience in treating horses and training surgeons, was here to speak at the national seminar on veterinary surgery organised by the Karnataka Veterinary University. Veterinarians were required in every industry where animals were involved, the equine scientist said. Examples of such industries were feed production, pharmaceutical industry, poultry, dairy, fisheries and meat industry and cosmetics industry. Apart from this, research and development was another field that employed a large number of veterinary graduates and postgraduates, he said. Horse-related industries were many and contributed significantly to the country's revenue. Fields such as racing, polo, equestrian sports and research offered a rewarding career to veterinarians. "According to Indian standards, we need a veterinarian for every 200 horses," Dr. Shridhar said. Therefore, career opportunities for veterinarians were huge and would continue to increase with the expansion of industries, he said. There were five main race courses in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai. There were three subsidiary race courses in Mysore, Pune, and Ooty.
