Bidar: Speakers at a seminar held here on Sunday welcomed the State Government's decision to introduce English from first standard in government schools.

The seminar was organised by the Backward and Minority Communities Employees' Federation and the Dalit Sangharsh Samiti.

In a joint declaration released, community leaders urged the State Government to implement its decision despite opposition from some groups. Inaugurating the seminar, Bahujan Samaj Party's State unit's general secretary Vaijanath Suryavanshi said the Government's decision was aimed at ensuring comprehensive development of the State.

He criticised Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Chandrashekara Patil's opposition to the decision.

He demanded that the parishat drop the idea of challenging the order.

He threatened to launch a State-wide agitation against the parishat if it continued to oppose the decision.

Writer Vithaldas Pyage suspected that the parishat's opposition to the decision was a conspiracy by some vested interests to deny development opportunities to deprived classes.

He said learning English was important in the wake of globalisation.

Former principal of the Aurad Government College V.B. Dikshit, Basavaraj Mayur, and Shambhu Sagar spoke. BAMCEF president Marigeppa and Pandit Chidri were present.
