IMEC to sign MoU with IISc.

Bangalore: Europe's leading independent nanoelectronics and nanotechnology research institute IMEC will sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Science here on Monday, IMEC's vice-president for Strategic Relations Roger De Keersmaecker has said.

"The MoU would support research by students in five subjects and could fund specific equipment as well," he told The Hindu here on Sunday. — Special Correspondent.

Farmer ends life

TUMKUR: A young farmer committed suicide at Veerlagotti in Pavagada taluk of Tumkur district on Sunday.

A Revenue official said V.C. Chittanna (25) was frustrated because of crop loss. On the advice of some of his friends, he went to Bangalore in search of a job. But he could not earn much. He returned home and committed suicide by consuming poison. — Staff Correspondent

MoU signed

BANGALORE: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Bell Helicopter on Sunday entered into a MoU for possible areas of cooperation in the supply of airframe sub-assemblies and product support.

The MoU was signed by HAL chairman Ashok K. Baweja and Bell Helicopter CEO Michael `Red' Redenbaugh. — Special Correspondent

Port development

Bangalore: Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa on Saturday said that there was need to develop Karwar as a major natural port.

Speaking to reporters after witnessing a presentation by the Canara Shipping Company in his chamber, Mr. Yediyurappa said that he would discuss the issue with Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Public Works Minister H.D. Revanna. He advised them to make the presentation again before the two leaders also.

Mr. Yediyurappa said that the Seabird Naval project was also in Karwar and the State Government had to discuss the issue with the Union Government before taking any decisions.

Statues to be installed

Bidar: The State Government and the Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Trust will install statues of Sardar Patel, Mahatma Gandhi and Babu Jagajivan Ram in Bidar. "The State Government and the Bidar City Municipal Council have agreed to our demands. They will be installed at the three traffic junctions on Bidar-Udgir Road," trust chairman Shivasharnappa Wali said in a press release here on Sunday. Sardar Patel's statue will be installed in front of Sapna Hotel at Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Nagar, Gandhiji's statue near Shivanagar entrance and Babu Jagajivan Ram's statue at the circle near Shahapur railway gate, Mr. Wali said. — Staff Correspondent

Camp for Haj pilgrims

MYSORE: A daylong camp for Haj pilgrims from Mysore will be organised at Southern Function Hall on Shivaji Road at N.R. Mohalla in the city on November 7. According to a press statement from Karnataka State Haj Committee, the camp will be inaugurated by Minister for Haj and Wakf Syed Zameer Ahmed Khan at 9 a.m. on November 7. During the camp, Muslims from Mysore planning a pilgrimage to Haj this year will be given training on various religious rituals. The pilgrims will also be given instructions on various aspects, including health issues. — Staff Correspondent.

`Honour Urdu writers'

Bidar: The All India Urdu Manch has opposed the State Government's decision of not selecting any Urdu writer for the Rajyotsava Award. In a memorandum to the Government on Sunday, manch's State unit president Syed Rauf Quadri accused the BJP of misleading its coalition partner JD(S) while selecting people for the award. The manch had submitted a list of 13 Urdu writers to be considered for the award. However, the Government had ignored the list. It was the first time Urdu writers had been neglected. He demanded that Urdu Academy president Nooroddin Sayeed resign on moral grounds. At least three Urdu writers should be given the award every year, he said. — Staff Correspondent

Cultural festival

Bangalore: Sir M. Visvesvaraya Institute of Technology conducted their 8th inter-collegiate cultural festival, Kalanjali, on Friday and Saturday. It was inaugurated by renowned classical musician R.K. Padmanabha. About 300 students from over 25 colleges across the State participated. The overall championship trophy was awarded to BNMIT. — Staff Reporter

IT help centre

HUBLI: The Income Tax Department has set up a IT help centre at the Chamber of Joint Commissioner of Income Tax, Range-2 Hubli, at Navanagar for the benefit of the corporate tax payers. The help centre became functional from Saturday, a release said.
