VIJAYAWADA: A six-year-old girl was drowned in the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC)'s swimming pool at Gurunanak Nagar on Sunday afternoon. Though a few local people tried to rescue her, she died in the pool due to suffocation. The Patamata police said that the body of Potarlanka Anitha, daughter of Saibabu, was fished out from the swimming pool, after her cousin Jyothi raised alarm. Anitha and Jyothi ventured into the pool after trespassing into the premises by climbing its closed gate, in the absence of its watchman. Though Anitha swam for a while, she began to drown when she reached the other end of the pool, where water was about six-foot deep, the police said. With her efforts to rescue Anitha proving futile, Jyothi raised alarm to catch the attention of passers-by. A few people from the surrounding houses managed to jump over the closed gate and found Anitha dead. They informed the Patamata police immediately. The police said Saibabu was running a laundry at an apartment complex in Srinagar colony, while her mother Venkata Ramana was a daily labourer. Jyothi told the police that Anitha had a desire to swim in the pool and insisted that she (Jyothi) too follow her. The two girls, with the help of Durga Prasad, a boy residing near their houses, scaled the six-foot height iron gate.
