Lyngdoh Committee suggestions on student union elections approved

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Centre to constitute a high-power committee headed by the former CBI Director, R.K. Raghavan, to look into the problem of ragging in educational institutions and suggest remedial measures.

The court, which gave its approval for implementation of the suggestions given by the J.M. Lyngdoh Committee on the conduct of student union elections in universities and affiliated colleges, on Monday enlarged the scope of the petitions and decided to tackle the ragging menace.

A Bench of Justice Arijit Pasayat and Justice Lokeshwar Singh Panta granted three weeks time to the parties to give their response to the Lyngdoh panel's report as well as suggestions.

The Bench told Additional Solicitor-General Gopal Subramanium that the Government appoint a committee headed by Mr. Raghavan, and the names of other members could be decided in three weeks. The Bench granted three weeks to the Centre for making the appointment after finalising the composition of the panel.

On the petition seeking a CBI probe into the death of Prof. Harbajan Singh Sabharwal in Ujjain as a fall-out of student union elections, the Bench perused the report submitted by the Madhya Pradesh Government on the progress of the investigation and directed the State to file further reports in three weeks.
