EXPRESSING OUTRAGE: Members of the Kerala NGO Union staging a demonstration in Kollam on Monday in protest against the death sentence to Saddam Hussein, former Iraqi President.

KOLLAM: The city and elsewhere in the district witnessed widespread protests on Monday against the death sentence to deposed Iraq President Saddam Hussein. Some of the protesters burnt U.S. President George W. Bush in effigy.

The Kerala NGO Union organised demonstrations in the city and taluk headquarters.

In the city, union members held demonstrations at the Civil Station complex and Taluk Cutchery Junction. The protesters marched around the complex, raising slogans against imperialism and condemning the sentence.

District president of the union M.E. Alfred; district secretary V.P. Jayaprakash Menon; and joint secretary M. Vishwanathan led the protest. The union is organising a dharna on Tuesday in front of the Head Post Office.

Youth Congress activists staged a demonstration and raised slogans alleging that the sentence was crafted to the wishes of U.S. imperialism. The activists went on a fast at Gandhi Park here to express solidarity with international movements for revoking the death sentence. District president of the Youth Congress P. Jermias inaugurated the fast.
