Tata Steel, IIM meet to focus on auto steel

About 800 delegates are expected to participate in the symposium

KOLKATA: The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) in association with Tata Steel is organising an international symposium on steels for automotives, as part of the National Metallurgists Day celebration in Jamshedpur, Tata Steel Managing Director, B. Muthuraman said.

Altogether 12 papers, including nine from overseas participants of the like of Toyota, Nippon Steel and Arcelor Mittal would be presented along with three from India, Mr. Muthuraman said at a press meet here on Monday. About 800 delegates are expected to participate in the three-day meet starting from November 13.

He said that students from the IITs and regional engineering colleges have also been invited to submit papers on metallurgy at the symposium and there will be a rolling Tata Steel Centenary Award for the best college.

To a question on whether Tata Steel was still looking for acquisitions, he said: "We will continuously look at acquisitions in the steel as well as the mines segment in India and abroad".

Iron ore exports

Expressing himself strongly on the issue of iron ore exports, he said that given its potential for steel consumption, India should not export iron ore. "No other country in a similar situation exports its iron ore", he said.
