`EU against death penalty'

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: Even while welcoming the judgment against deposed Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt on Monday reiterated the European Union's stand against death penalty.

"I think it's a good thing that finally there is a judgment on crimes against humanity during the regime of Saddam Hussein. Nevertheless, you know the position of the European Union on the death penalty," he told presspersons here.

He hoped the verdict would not create tension in Iraqi society.
