New syllabus for pre-primary schools soon

Rajesh Nair

Secondary education unlikely to come under new system from next academic year

PUDUCHERRY: The syllabus for pre-primary schools to be followed from next year will be ready within a fortnight.

The committee, headed by Gnanam, former vice-chancellor of the Pondicherry University, and chairman of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, held two sittings in this regard. The final one would be held shortly to finalise the syllabus, sources in the Education Department told The Hindu .

"We are starting with the pre-primary level and it might take a year or so for framing the curriculum for other streams," a senior Department official said.

At the pre-primary level, emphasis would be on oral teaching. At the UKG level, written form of teaching would be minimal. Officials said a good number of private schools prescribed textbooks for students, assigned homework and conducted exams, especially in UKG.

"We wanted to put an end to this practice. We want the children to carry only tiffin boxes to school," the official said.
