COIMBATORE: Now, this is an instance of the private sector chipping in to reduce unemployment. Industry associations here are providing in their units placement to unemployed persons who come to the weekly grievances meeting at the Collectorate, seeking jobs. While the units here are in need of more workers about 50 per cent of the applications, which are received at the grievances meeting, are employment related.
Grievances meetings
Hence, representatives of the some of the associations here were present at a couple of grievances meetings. They scrutinised the applications and provided jobs for some of the candidates. The Southern India Mills' Association, which represents the textile mills, has helped about 50 candidates find work in mills through these two meetings. It now plans a placement cell. Candidates interested in jobs in private units can fill in an application at the meeting and submit it at the placement cell. These can be scrutinised and eligible candidates placed at the units. With regard to the Southern Engineering Manufacturers' Association, which represents the engineering, pumpset manufacturing units here, it received some applications from the district administration and a couple of candidates were given jobs in the units. Depending on the needs of its member units, the association can shortlist candidates and sends their applications to the industries, says its president, C.R. Shanmugasundaram. The Coimbatore District Small Industries Association has sought the manpower needs of its member units by November 10. The small-scale units should give the type of workers needed, their qualification and number of workers needed. This would be forwarded to the district administration.
