"WE PROTEST": Traders at Greater Kailash raising slogans against the Supreme Court decision on Monday not to stay sealing of commercial units operating from residential areas . PHOTO: RAJEEV BHATT
NEW DELHI: Hours after the Supreme Court directive on Monday to continue the sealing drive, angry traders in some parts of the capital closed shops and came out on the streets shouting slogans. While traffic was disrupted for a short duration, no incident of violence was reported. Around 5 p.m., the police received information that traders at Greater Kailash in South Delhi were downing their shops' shutters. Shouting slogans, they threatened to go to any extent to save their livelihood. Simultaneously, traders at Malviya Nagar in South Delhi also laid carpets on the road and sat on a dharna. The protests went on for over two hours, but vehicular movement in the area was not affected. In West Delhi, however, the protestors blocked the road at the Raja Garden roundabout in Rajouri Garden for over an hour. They later dispersed after being persuaded by the police. Some traders held a brief demonstration in the Krishna Nagar area of East Delhi to express their anguish. The police claimed that no protests were reported from other parts of the capital. Anticipating yet another round of protests, police officers in all the districts had earlier held meetings with the traders and local leaders and had urged them to organise peaceful demonstrations.
