Thiruvananthapuram
Governments have come and gone and crores of rupees have been spent, but as soon as the raindrops start pattering down, city residents start scrambling to avoid the Thampanoor and East Fort areas. Despite the huge funds spent on flood control projects, the two prime locations remain waterlogged for hours after each heavy shower, leaving pedestrians and motorists stranded. It is not only the Government that has committed so much of effort and funds for flood control, the City Corporation and the Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority have not lagged behind in ideas and projects, but to no avail. The latest initiative has come from the City Corporation, thanks to the generous availability of funds from the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) promoted by the Union Government. The civic body is working on a major project to find a permanent solution to the problem. City residents are keeping their fingers crossed.
