Dispelling fears

Atomic power is viewed with suspicion by many people. Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar sought to dispel such fears in a speech at a meeting held in the city last week. Radiation is present almost everywhere. The concern should be whether it is within permissible limits. As for atomic plants, a strict international regimen is followed to ensure that the radiation levels are within the safe range. It is also wrong to presume that environment will remain pristine if no development activity is undertaken. The consequences of mass consumption that follow a modern lifestyle will be reason enough to degrade the environment.
