Protecting white-backed vultures
Special Correspondent
BHUBANESWAR:
The process has started for setting up a centre for conservation, breeding and captive care of the critically threatened white-backed vultures at the Nandankanan Zoological Park near here.
Zoo Director Ajit Pattnaik said the centre would be set up as per a decision of the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests to develop future strategies for saving the white-backed vultures from extinction. The centre was likely to be made functional within six months.
Three centres
Three such centres were being planned in different zoos in the country.
The services of the Orissa Veterinary College and the Regional Centre for Wildlife Health located in the college in Bhubaneswar would be utilised for the conservation of the species, Mr. Pattnaik said. The decline in the population of the Indian white-backed vultures has been very fast. As per the surveys conducted in 1992 and 2003, the number of vultures in 1992 was more than 100 times than that in 2003.
