Governor summons Assembly

CHENNAI: Governor Surjit Singh Barnala, in a notification, has summoned the Legislative Assembly to meet at 9-30 a.m. on December 4 in the Assembly Chamber at the Secretariat. — Special Correspondent

Vaiko flays Saddam sentence

CHENNAI: General secretary of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) Vaiko on Tuesday condemned the death sentence given by a trial court in Iraq against the former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein.

Dubbing the trial court as a "puppet" of the United States, he said in a statement here that the court did not adopt legal norms followed in the trials against the Nazi war criminals of the World War II. Failure to reverse the death penalty against Mr. Hussein would result in revival of the bitterly fought crusades of the medieval era, Mr.Vaiko said, appealing to Government of India to come forward to create international opinion against the execution. — Special Correspondent

"Include Kamaraj in film on Periyar"

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president M.Krishnasswamy has urged film director G.Rajasekar to include scenes depicting Periyar's close association with Kamaraj in his film Periyar, which is under production.

In a statement on Tuesday, Mr. Krishnasswamy said it was Periyar who described Kamaraj rule in the State as "true Tamilian rule." In Dravidar Kazhagam's conference at Devakottai in 1962, Periyar said under the leadership of Kamaraj, the State had achieved progress, which had not been possible in the previous 2000 years and if the State had to advance further then there should be Kamaraj rule for the next 10 years.

The TNCC chief said a film on Periyar would not be complete if it failed to give due importance to Kamaraj. — Special Correspondent

Probe sought into working of sugar mills

CHENNAI: Tamilnadu Sugar Workers' Federation, affiliated to CITU, has urged the State Government to order an inquiry into the working of cooperative and public sector mills in the State.

In a statement here on Tuesday, federation president V.Kumar alleged that sugar mills, which were earning profit, were now incurring losses. For example, Subramanya Siva Cooperative Sugar Mill at Harur in Dharmapuri district, which earned a profit of Rs. 17 crore in 2004-05 financial year incurred a loss of Rs. 17 lakh in the next financial year.

He wanted the Government to order a full-fledged inquiry into the working of the mills. — Special Correspondent

New train to Thiruvananthapuram

CHENNAI: Southern Railway is to run a weekly super fast train between Chennai Central and Thiruvananthapuram from November 11.

Train (2697) will leave Chennai Central at 4 p.m. on Sunday and reach Thiruvananthapuram at 7 a.m., the next day. In the opposite direction, train (2698) will leave Thiruvananthapuram at 8 p.m. on Saturday and arrive Chennai Central at 12.15 p.m., the next day.

Reservation is available for the above trains, says a release. — Special Correspondent

Lifer for six in two murder cases

KARUR: The District Sessions Judge, Ayyappan, on Tuesday sentenced six persons to undergo life imprisonment in connection with two separate murders. Ramasamy, Sivakumar and his wife Gomathi, belonging to Velayuthampalayam were found guilty of murdering Ramasamy's wife Thilagavathy at Varapalayam on September 30, 2002 and were sentenced to life imprisonment. Similarly, the Judge sentenced to life Kali Gounder, his wife Rasammal, and son Velu after finding them guilty of murdering one Annamalai over a land dispute on September 4, 2005.

Heavy rain

PUDUKOTTAI: Heavy rain lashed parts of Pudukottai district for the second consecutive day on Monday.

For the 24 hours ended at 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday, Kattumavadi recorded a rainfall of 48 mm, followed by Keezhanilaikudi - 44, Aranthangi - 43, Meemisal - 42, Alankudi - 38, Nakudi - 35.6, Manamelkudi - 32, Avudayarkoil - 33, Karaiyur - 31, Ayikudi - 25.2, Perungalur - 22, Mazhaiyur - 20, Karamabakudi - 19 and Ponnamaravathy - 15. Pudukottai and surrounding areas registered moderate showers on Tuesday.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 103.95 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Tuesday with an inflow of 14,353 cusecs and a discharge of 100 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Man released

Tirunelveli : A Judicial Magistrate Court released Joseph, a Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board employee, who was arrested for domestic violence on October 28, on a conditional bail here on Tuesday. Joseph was arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by his wife, Benedict Mary, a teacher.

Fisherman killed

RAMANATHAPURAM: A fisherman of Soosaiappar Pattinam was killed in a freak accident near the sea off Katchativu.

Sources said that Santhiago (50), son of Pichai, accidentally fell down from a trawler and was hit by a wooden rod when the trawler was anchored for fishing on Tuesday.

Fellow fishermen brought the body to the shore.

Detonators seized

RAMANATHAPURAM: The Thondi police seized an unclaimed box, which contained 90 detonators, 91 gelatine sticks and 23 metres of wire. Sources said that the box was seized at Thiruvotriyur Junction.

Sent to special camp

RAMANATHAPURAM: The `Q' branch officials sent four suspected members of Tamil terrorist groups in Sri Lanka to a special camp at Chengalpet.

Sources said that Balakumar, Akilan, Ravishankar and Mehan were separated from the other refugees.

They came to Rameswaram in September and October.

Bus impounded

RAMANATHAPURAM: A fast-track court here on Monday impounded a bus of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation for failing to pay compensation to a victim.

Sources said that the court ordered the corporation to pay Rs. 2.5 lakh to one Lakshmi of Melatheru near Parthibanur on October 24, 2004, for an accident in which her husband Arumugam was killed.

Even after reminders, the corporation did not pay the compensation.

Solatium given

DINDIGUL: Collector R. Vasuki on Monday gave away solatium of Rs.1.05 lakh to the family members of three victims who died in a wall collapse at Adiyanuthu near Dindigul.

The amount was released from the Chief Minister's flood relief fund.

Student commits suicide

ERODE: Sudarsan, a postgraduate student from Mettupalayam, committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan. According to the Erode Taluk police, the student was staying along with his friends in a private hostel. On Monday, Sudarsan did not attend the class and was in the room while other students left for the college. When they returned in the evening they found Sudarsan hanging. It was said that he was frustrated in his life. A case has been registered in this connection.

Charred to death

ERODE: Selvaradha, a resident of Vasanthanagar, Solar, was killed when her sari caught fire in a stove on Sunday. According to police, her husband Natrayan who went to rescue her was also killed in the accident.

They succumbed to injuries at the Erode Government Headquarters hospital. The couple had a one-year-old son.
