Vigilance department `is partisan'

Special Correspondent

It is furthering interests of DMK by filing cases against Opposition: AIADMK MPs

CHENNAI: Ten AIADMK MPs on Tuesday charged the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) with functioning in a partisan manner with "the sole aim of perpetuating the interests of the DMK by taking revenge on the Opposition parties and especially the AIADMK ."

In an open letter addressed to the Director-General of Police and the Director of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, the Rajya Sabha members said they wanted to know at what stage was the investigation initiated against some of the present Ministers; will the completed investigation against such persons before entering office culminate in charge sheets or not?; why so much delay when the charge sheets were ready but withheld on the eve of the elections?

The DVAC should focus on its intention to curb corruption without bias. As MPs they were entitled to know about the proper functioning of the Directorate which was being run with public funds.

The MPs who signed the letter were N. Jothi, K. Malaisamy, T.T.V. Dhinakaran, Gokula Indira, S.P.M. Syed Khan, R. Kamaraj, C. Perumal, Thanga Tamil Selvan, S. Anbalagan and N.R. Govindarajar.

"The happenings in Tamil Nadu during the past five months, especially in the affairs of the Directorate reflect not only a partisan attitude but also an apathetic attitude which is highly deplorable." It was surprising that the Directorate could suo motu resort to witchhunts and go after former Ministers but not after those belonging to the ruling party, the letter said.

Since the DMK came back to power in May this year, the DVAC functioning seemed to have been motivated only with a view to helping the DMK and suppressing the Opposition, mainly the AIADMK.

The police, in general, foisted cases on AIADMK workers.

Neither the police department nor the DVAC was created to perpetuate the political agenda of any political party.

The purpose of the letter was not to interfere with the regular bona fide investigations.

It was to place before the public how the DVAC was acting partisan , the MPs said.
