Corrections and clarifications

  • The caption of the photograph in "Jamnalal Bajaj awards presented" ("Variety" page, November 7, 2006) was: "HONOURED: N.R. Narayana Murthy (third from right), Board Chairman, Infosys Technologies, presented the Jamnalal Bajaj awards in Mumbai on Monday. To his left is Rahul Bajaj, Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation ... ." A reader points out that it should have been "... To his right is Rahul Bajaj ... or "On the left is ... ."

  • A reader says, with reference to the editorial "A travesty of justice" (November 6, 2006), "You are flawed in your statement when it reads, `Ramsey Clark, former U.S. Attorney General — being physically ejected.' In fact, Ramsey is the son of the erstwhile U.S. Supreme Court Judge and Attorney General Tomsey Clark." Ramsey Clark, who heads an international team of lawyers involved in the defence (of Saddam Hussein), was the 66th U.S. Attorney General (1967-1969). His father Thomas Campbell Clark was appointed the 59th Attorney General (1945-1949) by President Harry S. Truman in 1945, and to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1949. Thomas Clark resigned from the Court in 1967 when Ramsey Clark was appointed Attorney General, and afterwards sat on the Courts of Appeal in all eleven U.S. Circuits and in the federal district court.

  • Referring to the PTI report "Maulana seeks law to curb fatwas" (November 3, 2006), a reader points out that the reference to "ishtehad" (discussion) in the text is incorrect. It should have been "Ijtehad", which means intellectual endeavour to seek the solutions of day-to-day matters. Ijtehad has been much emphasised in Islam and is a rational and analytical approach, based on the Quran and on the teachings of the Sunnah, for interpreting religious matters.

  • In "Centre urged to stop Sethu project works" (November 4, 2006), the sentence was: "Movement convenor M. Jeeva said in a statement here that fishermen would organise protests in 10 coastal districts from November 20 to October 2, to highlight the demand." It should have been November 20 to December 2.

  • Sports page corrections. Sri Lanka A's score in the infobox in "Arjun Yadav bails South out of trouble" ("Sport", November 5, 2006) was incorrectly given as 36 without loss [at the Duleep Trophy match, Kolkata]. It should have been 36 for one, as stated in the text and the scoreboard. The error was corrected in the later editions.

In "Brazil outspikes United States" ("Sport", November 5, 2006), it was stated that China dropped to 1-3 [at the women's World volleyball championships in Japan]. As a reader points out, it should have been China dropped to 3 (victories)-1 (defeat).

  • In The Hindu Crossword 8749 ("Variety" page, November 3, 2006), Clue 19 Down was: "Worried over run rash (7)". A few readers point out that it should have been "Worried over sun rash", as the answer ("Nervous"; "Variety" page, November 4, 2006) can be obtained from "over sun", and not from "over run".

It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
