JAIPUR: Talks between the Rajasthan Government and representatives of farmers in the Phase I area of the Indira Gandhi Canal Project here on Tuesday failed with the former rejecting the demand for a compensation package for the family of Chandu Ram Saran, the farmer who had died allegedly after police beating. The groups at the negotiation table broke up in five minutes after assembly at 4-20 p.m. as the Government functionaries led by Home Minister G.C.Kataria took the stand that any compensation to the deceased's family was not tenable after the medical board's opinion on the post-mortem report ruling out any injury as cause of death. The Kisan Mazdoor Vyapari Sangarsh Samiti (KMVSS), spearheading the farmers' agitation for irrigation water in three districts of Bikaner division, had demanded a relief package for Chandu's family. They had finally agreed to dispose of the body after the Government promised a package on the basis of the medical board report. Earlier, prior to the post-mortem report, Mr.Kataria had attributed Chandu's death to heart failure, inviting criticism from the Congress and the Left parties. "It was a travesty of talks. The Government is basically anti-farmer and feudal. It has not changed its stand on the issue of package," Pradesh Congress Committee president B.D.Kalla said after the aborted talks.
