KOLLAM: A major fire broke out in a two-storey building housing a medical store in Paravur town early on Tuesday morning. Six fire engines were deployed. Kerala Fire and Rescue Services personnel had to fight for two and a half hours to bring the fire under control. A short circuit is suspected to have caused the fire. The building and the stock of medicines inside have been ravaged. Tension erupted in the township after the fire was brought under control when a group of persons, under the United Democratic Front banner, blocked the way of the fire engines and declared a hartal in the town. The demonstration was in protest against the Government's alleged dillydallying on the promise of commissioning a fire station at Paravur.
