Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Veterinary Association, Kerala, has urged the Government to take up the construction of well-equipped abattoirs in all corporations, municipalities and panchayats under the Eleventh Five Year Plan. In a pressnote here on Tuesday, Association general secretary D. Sanjay highlighted the need to encourage public-private partnership for the project. He called upon the Government to explore the possibility of setting up carcass utilisation plants to process the by-products of slaughter-like blood and bone. The pressnote hailed the proposal by Animal Welfare Board member S.K. Mittal to strengthen inspection of animals passing through the 17 check posts in the State. The association demanded the establishment of specialised units to identify different species of meat and prevent adulteration. It stressed the need for stringent inspection by veterinarians at slaughter-houses and check-posts.
