India should stand by Saddam: V.P. Singh

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI : The former Prime Minister, V.P. Singh, on Tuesday said India should take the initiative and mobilise opinion among other nations against the death sentence handed down to Saddam Hussein.

He said the war foisted upon Iraq in the name of baseless charges of possessing weapons of mass destruction had resulted in widespread destruction. ``The Bush administration is responsible for the destruction and loss of lives,'' he alleged.

``India should stand by Iraq, its people and Saddam Hussein in such circumstances.''
